The current Marshfield Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF), built in 1978, is designed to process an average daily flow of 2.1 mgd and a peak hourly flow of 5.6 mgd. The Facility is located on a marsh in the Brant Rock section of Town. The area around the marsh is heavily settled and is primarily a beach community. Many of the homes are summer cottages that have been recently converted into year round homes. The area directly to the south of the treatment plant, located across the marsh is Green Harbor. This small village harbors both commercial and recreational fleets.
The Marshfield Wastewater Treatment Facility is an activated sludge plant which can operate in extended aeration and contact stabilization mode. The facility provides incoming wastewater and septage with secondary levels of treatment which removes in excess of 85 percent of the pollutants in the wastewater and septage it receives.
The liquid treatment train consists of an influent pumping station followed by a grit chamber, aeration tanks and final clarifiers. The effluent from the final clarifiers is disinfected prior to discharge to the outfall sewer. Depending on the tidal elevation in the Bay, the discharge from the WWTF occurs either by gravity or by pumping.
Much of the equipment that exists in the plant and its pump stations is still the original equipment that was installed in 1978. During the 1990s the DPW made efforts to evaluate equipment and systems as well as identify and prioritize this information to schedule upgrades and replacement. Much of the equipment is over 25 years old and has exceeded its useful life. As the plant equipment runs beyond its useful life expectancy and becomes obsolete or irreparable with available parts unit processes and equipment require upgrading. This is an ongoing process and since 1990 much progress has been made to maintain the plants operation. These ongoing projects are essential for the operations and maintenance of the Towns WWTF and are a continual cycle.
Pump Stations:
· Main Pump Station – Located on Town Pier Rd – This station feeds all wastewater flow to the current WWTF and was actually constructed from the original 1960 treatment facility.
· Plymouth Avenue Pump Station –
· Avon St Pump Station –
· Central Ave Pump Station –
· Homestead Avenue Pump Station – Constructed in 2001
· Anderson Drive Pump Station – Scheduled for construction in 2003 as part of the “sewer 2000” Route 139 sewer extension.
· Macker Terrace Pump Station – Scheduled for construction in 2003 as part of the “sewer 2000” Route 139 sewer extension.
· Homeland Drive Pump Station – Scheduled for construction in 2003 as part of the “sewer 2000” Route 139 sewer extension.
