Guidelines Covering Abatements for Financial Hardship within the current
Federal Non-Farm Poverty Level Incomes
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 23, 2008
The Department of Public Works Commissioners voted to use the following family income levels in accordance with the U.S.Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) poverty guidelines in considering abatements for water, sewer, and trash fees. When filing for an abatement for financial assistance, proof of total annual household family income must be substantiated. The following forms of proof are acceptable as income backup information for each household member:
a. A current statement of social security benefits received annually;
b. A current statement of any welfare benefits received;
c. A copy of the current signed 1040 Tax Return;
d. A copy of the annual statement for any pension benefits received;
e. Proof of any other income received by applying household (include ALL household members).
In addition, the applicant should also provide a telephone number where they can be contacted should more information be required.
All financial assistance abatements are approved or denied on an individual eligibility basis. Information is kept strictly confidential. All abatement applications must be submitted within 90 days of the bill due date to be considered by the DPW Superintendent or the Board of Public Works.
This document is hereby accepted by majority vote of the Board of Public Works and shall supersede any other directives issued prior to this date which are in conflict with its contents.
