The process for becoming a call or career firefighter in Marshfield.

The Marshfield Fire Department will from time to time accept applications for the position of Call Firefighter.  Our intention is to hire highly skilled candidates who will provide high quality services to the citizens of Marshfield into the 21st century.  We encourage those with diverse specialized training, experience, and certification levels, including Firefighter I/II and Advanced Life Support to apply for this extremely challenging position.    

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applications may be obtained at the Marshfield Fire Department, Fire Chief’s Office, 60 South River Street, Marshfield during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants shall not be less than 18 years old at time of application.

Must hold at least a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).  

Possession of valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. A copy of the license must be submitted with your application.

Be a current resident of the Town of Marshfield.

APPLICATION REVIEW:

Prior to practical examination:

        1.  Submission of proper application and/or resume.
        
2.  Compliance with minimum eligibility requirements.

At the completion of the Application Review Process, candidates who qualify will be furnished:

A  Letter of Confirmation from the Fire Chief.  This letter, along with a valid Massachusetts drivers license will allow entry to selection process.

Instructional sheets providing date, time, location, and other pertinent information.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT:

Graduation from high school or equivalent is the minimum requirement.  A college degree or college experience is highly desirable.

Possession of valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Must be a non-smoker on and off duty at time of appointment in accordance with the provisions of Massachusetts’s General Law, Chapter 41, section 101A.

Examples of desired training and/or experience includes:

Certification as a Technical Rescue Technician
Certification in confined space entry and rescue
Completion of Massachusetts Fire Academy Recruit Training
Certification to Firefighter Level 1 and/or Firefighter Level 2
Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate or Paramedic
Other Firefighter Training/Certification
Certification as a diver.
Previous Fire Department experience

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge.  Working knowledge of the streets and physical layout of the town. Knowledge of general building construction.  Knowledge of electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems.  Training in the use of Fire Department related power equipment.  Working knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques. Knowledge of rescue and extrication techniques.

Ability.  Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public.  Courage and emotional stability.  Ability to apply standard firefighting and emergency aid techniques to specific situations.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to meet required physical standards of age, weight, height and strength.  The firefighter’s position involves physically risky functions under emergency conditions.  A firefighter’s functions may include: connecting, pulling and operating hose lines; operating a fire pump; positioning and climbing ladders; emergency rescue and lifesaving; ventilating smoke filled areas; using and maintaining tools and equipment; and physical training and fire station activities.  

Performance of work also involves standing and walking for long periods of time.  Physical agility is required to access all areas at the scene of the fire.  Emergencies may require pushing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching with hands and arms.  Firefighters may be required to lift/carry equipment or persons weighing more than 100 pounds.  Wears protective clothing during emergency or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.

APPOINTMENT:

Consideration for appointment will be based upon:

        1.      Examination results
        2.      Evaluation of application/resume
        3.      Experience/performance
        4.      Interview with Training Officers

When a position becomes available, a number of candidates will be interviewed by the Training Officers.

The Training Officers will make recommendations to the Fire Chief.  The Fire Chief will complete background checks through the Criminal History Systems Board.  The Fire Chief will then make the final selection as the hiring authority.  
 
The successful candidate or candidates will then be offered a Conditional Offer of Employment. See sample enclosed.
 
STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS:

If considered for an appointment to a position, appointees must:

Pass a pre-employment medical examination.  The medical examination for entry level Firefighters as defined by The Massachusetts Human Resources Division.

All candidates for Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician positions are subject to the provisions of Massachusetts’s General law, Chapter 41, section 101A, which states that “no person who smokes tobacco products shall be eligible for appointment as a Firefighter and no person appointed shall continue in such office or position if such person thereafter smokes any tobacco products.
