Who is Eligible?
Eligibility, for most VA benefits, is based on service during war time and an honorable discharge from active military service or other than under "dishonorable" conditions. After 1980 veterans must have completed two years of active service. Prior to 1980, any service time qualifies in order "to qpply for benefits."
How to Access Outpatient Rx Benefits
In order to receive prescription drugs, all veterans must be enrolled in the VA healthcare system. (Call Brockton VA ( 1-508-583-4500) for an appointment and take your DD 214 or similar document). Before drugs can be prescribed through the VA, a VA primary care provider, who will determine whether a prescription needs to be written, must see all veterans. Currently, we are told that if you take your last medical exam with lab tests etc, your perscriptions and your discharge papers, the nurse in charge of the perscription mailing program will authorize two months of drugs until your appointment comes through with the VA Doctor.
How much are the co-payments & who fills the Rx?
Co-payments for prescription drugs are $2.00 for each 30-day supply. This depends on your income level and may be as high as $6.00 for a 30 day supply.
- Outpatient visits are $15.00 per visit, regardless of the number of office visits on a given day.
- Prescriptions can only be filled at VA Clinics, Hospitals, or through the VA mail-order pharmacy.
- Prescriptions are transmitted electronically to the VA computer system, Vista, so that orders may be dispensed and mailed directly to the patient’s home.
